“Living in an Alaska frontier town didn’t prevent Fairbanks’ women from wearing current fashions, buying enormous hats, or attending balls and lawn parties. You’ll learn how they stayed up-to-date on style trends and kept those lovely tea dresses white, even in the mining camps.
You’ll find more than just antique wheels at the Fountainhead Museum! Here you can follow the progression of fashion alongside our cars, with examples from the late Victorian through early Swing eras. The changes in clothing styles are as dramatic as those in automotive design!
The museum’s clothing collection includes more than 130 vintage dresses, coats, hats, men’s suits, shoes and accessories spanning eight decades. These include silk bustle dresses, Edwardian walking suits, top hats, stunning gowns from the Titanic era, heavily beaded flapper chemises, antique purses, tuxedos and Chantilly lace creations. Approximately 50 outfits are on display at a time, with exhibits rotating every four months. Each display colorfully illustrates how and why styles changed with the times, and how the popularity of the automobile influenced fashion.
